Nobel Prize

The Nobel Prize originated from the last will and testament of Alfred Nobel (1833–1896), a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur best known for inventing dynamite. Deeply concerned by the destructive applications of his inventions, Nobel dedicated the bulk of his immense fortune to the establishment of prizes that would recognize those who 'shall have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.' His will, signed in 1895, specified the creation of five prizes in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. The Nobel Foundation was subsequently established to administer the funds and organize the awarding of the prizes. The prizes are awarded by different Swedish and Norwegian institutions. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the Nobel Prize in Physics and Chemistry. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The Swedish Academy awards the Nobel Prize in Literature. Uniquely, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, appointed by the Norwegian Parliament, reflecting Nobel's wish for it to be awarded by an international body. In 1968, Sweden's central bank, Sveriges Riksbank, established the 'Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.' While often referred to as a Nobel Prize, it is not part of Alfred Nobel's original endowment but is administered by the Nobel Foundation and awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Winners, known as laureates, are typically announced in October each year. The official award ceremonies take place on December 10th, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death. Most prizes are presented in Stockholm, Sweden, by the King of Sweden, while the Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway, by the Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, often in the presence of the King of Norway. Each laureate receives a medal, a diploma, and a monetary award, which varies year to year. The Nobel Prizes hold unparalleled international prestige, influencing academic and scientific discourse, inspiring new generations of researchers, and highlighting critical global issues through the recognition of peace efforts and humanistic achievements. Despite their esteemed status, the Nobel Prizes have faced various criticisms and controversies over the years. These include debates over perceived omissions of deserving candidates, the inherently political nature of the Peace Prize, the absence of categories for fields like mathematics, engineering, or environmental science, and historical imbalances in gender and geographical representation among laureates. The selection process remains rigorously guarded for 50 years. Over time, rules have evolved; for instance, the maximum number of laureates per prize is limited to three, and posthumous awards are generally not given unless the laureate dies after the announcement but before the ceremony.
