The concept of a 'Senate' has deep historical roots, stemming from the *Senatus* of ancient Rome. This esteemed body, composed of elder statesmen (*senes* meaning 'old men'), served as an advisory council to the Roman kings, then a powerful governing body during the Republic, and later continued to exist under the Empire. The influence of the Roman Senate on political thought and institutional design has been profound, providing a blueprint for later legislative bodies that sought to embody wisdom, experience, and stability. While modern senates differ significantly from their Roman predecessor, they often retain the spirit of a deliberative assembly intended to provide a more considered and often conservative review of legislative proposals.
