Transformer

A transformer fundamentally consists of two or more coils of insulated wire, known as windings, wrapped around a common laminated magnetic core. The primary winding is connected to an alternating current (AC) source, creating a varying magnetic flux in the core. This changing magnetic flux then links with the secondary winding, inducing an electromotive force (EMF) across it, due to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. This process allows electrical energy to be transferred from the primary circuit to the secondary circuit without any direct metallic connection between them. The ratio of the number of turns in the primary winding (Np) to the number of turns in the secondary winding (Ns) dictates the voltage and current transformation. For an ideal transformer, the ratio of the secondary voltage (Vs) to the primary voltage (Vp) is equal to the turns ratio (Ns/Np). Conversely, the ratio of the secondary current (Is) to the primary current (Ip) is inversely proportional to the turns ratio (Np/Ns), ensuring the conservation of power (P = V x I). Transformers can be classified as step-up transformers if the secondary voltage is higher than the primary voltage (Ns > Np), or step-down transformers if the secondary voltage is lower (Ns < Np). While highly efficient, real transformers experience some energy losses. These include copper losses (due to the resistance of the windings), eddy current losses (induced circulating currents in the core), and hysteresis losses (energy expended in magnetizing and demagnetizing the core). These losses are minimized through various design techniques, such as using laminated cores made of silicon steel to reduce eddy currents, and selecting core materials with low hysteresis. Transformers are also categorized by their core type (e.g., shell type, core type), their cooling method (e.g., oil-filled, dry type), and their intended application. Transformers are indispensable in a vast array of applications. In power systems, they are used at generating stations to step up the voltage for long-distance transmission lines, drastically reducing current and thereby minimizing resistive energy losses (P = I^2R). At substations, they step down the voltage for local distribution and, finally, for safe use in homes and businesses. Beyond power grids, transformers are integral to electronics, found in power supplies to convert line voltage to lower voltages required by electronic circuits, in audio systems for impedance matching, and in isolation transformers for safety, providing galvanic isolation between circuits. Their robust design, high efficiency, and critical role in AC power manipulation make them one of the most vital electrical components ever developed.
